Lucie’s Pantry - Fighting against food poverty

Region/country

THE CONTEXT OF YOUR INITIATIVE

Food poverty is an increasing difficulty faced by many families and individuals across the UK. The use of food-banks has dramatically increased over recent years but these only offer food on an emergency basis.

Lucie’s Pantry is a social supermarket located at the Emmaus Salford Community Homestore on Fitzwarren Street in Pendleton. Lucie’s Pantry aims to provide a sustainable and affordable source of food and household essentials to members of the Salford community struggling to make ends meet through debt, illness or low income.

THE ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT AS PART OF YOUR INITIATIVE

People who want to use the social supermarket will become a member of Lucie’s Pantry. Members will pay £2.50 per week and be able to choose items to the value of approximately £15 each week.

Membership will be limited by need and geographical distance to the outlet. In addition to food and household items, members will be offered additional support including a regular Citizens Advice surgery.

By becoming a member of Lucie’s Pantry, individuals will be helping to support others in their community. The more members who use the social supermarket, the more quality items can be sourced allowing even more people to benefit.

WHO IS INVOLVED FROM OUR GROUP?

Lucie’s Pantry is run by Emmaus Salford companions with support from local volunteers. The initiative will benefit many individuals and families from the Salford area.
